MemoQ Fest 2009

On April 23-24 2009, MemoQ User Conference was held in Budapest. MemoQ is a translation software (a CAT tool) developed by Kilgray Ltd., Hungary. The conference was accompanied by a series of workshops aimed at showing the most effective ways of using the software, and its future development. The conference was attended by the President of MAart Agency – Monika Popiołek, by Ewa Legumina – MAart Quality Control Department Co-ordinator, and by Piotr Peszyński – MAart Project Manager.

ALC Conference 2009

On May 13-16 2009, the President of MAart Agency, Monika Popiołek, attended the annual ALC (Association of Translation Agencies) conference in Austin, Texas. The conference theme was, among other topics, the issue of building relationships with clients, the role of coaching in building of a translation sales team, new trends in translation and localisation tools, and effective participation in industry fairs.

  


5th Anniversary of Poland’s Accession to the European Union – 5th Anniversary of MAart Agency Translation Services to all the European Union Bodies

May 1st marks the fifth anniversary of Poland’s accession to the European Union. Apart from that, five years have passed since MAart Agency started directly supplying services to the EU bodies: the European Parliament, the European Economic and Social Committee, the Committee of the Regions, and the European Court of Auditors, CDT and the European Commission.

Our cooperation with EU institutions began with MAart Agency being awarded the PL01/2004/EU contract for 2004-2008 in a tender. This was a very busy period during which we translated such documents as: draft motions, minutes, amendments, protocols, memos to political groups, petitions, verbatim reports, and information sheets about the European Union. MAart Agency also contributed to the translation of the EU Constitution.

Poland’s accession to the European Union was a huge challenge for the whole nation; and for MAart it was the beginning of new challenging projects that required top quality, state-of-the-art technology and excellent management to satisfy all the strict requirements of the EU institutions. EU projects not only require allocation of excellent human resources (translators, project managers), but also efficient process management, quality assurance, and use of advances translation management systems. “During the most intense periods of our co-operation, we would sometimes translate over 10 000 pages of EU documents in one quarter”, recalls Izabela Zboina, Project Manager and an “EU translation veteran”. Since 2004 she manages translation projects for EU institutions at MAart Agency.



The most recent tender for translation services for the European Parliament (PL/2008/MAIN) for the period of 2008-2012, was announced last year. Once again, MAart Agency was selected as the exclusive provider of translation services for the EU bodies, confirming our excellent record and market leadership for premium quality translation services.

We are pleased to present the profiles of three young people, thanks to whom work in our day-to-day office operations is so much more efficient.

Martyna Krzemińska, Administrative Specialist. She provides support for the Customer Service Department, Marketing Department, and aids our Human Resources Specialist and our Project Managers.



Marcin Marzec, Administrative Assistant. He supports the Project Managers responsible for servicing translations for the European Union.



Bartosz Konowrocki is the new Administration and Logistics Specialist at MAart Agency and therefore is responsible for the logistics and administration on behalf of all the departments.

The TRANSLATE POLAND Social Campaign
“We would like Poland to be perceived as a cosmopolitan and foreigner-friendly country”.

Monika Baczyńska talks with Maja Zawierzeniec, Marketing Manager at MAart Agency, in charge of the Translate Poland project



What is the goal of the Translate Poland Campaign initiated by MAart Agency?

Maja Zawierzeniec: The main goal of the campaign ‘[Let’s] Translate Poland (before 2012)’ is the promotion of applied translation and communication for tourism, business and leisure in the urban environment. The project will start off with identifying information and communication gaps, and providing correct translation of all useful information for tourists and business people living and working in Poland. We wish to use our vast resources, knowledge and experience to create a comprehensive multilingual environment that facilitates everyday communication for a multicultural society.

What is the origin of the campaign?

Maja Zawierzeniec:As professionals specialising in the area of translation, which requires a certain passion for foreign languages, communication, correct translation, and clarity, we have been pointing out for many years, the incongruity and deficiencies in our linguistic environment, which is supposed to serve not only the Poles but also foreigners living here and visiting the country. The fifth anniversary of Polish accession to the EU, as well as the approaching organisation of Euro Cup Championships in Poland in 2012, offer a good opportunity to audit our country from a “linguistic” point of view. We want Poland to be perceived as a cosmopolitan and foreigner-friendly country, and this can only be achieved if we create a proper multilingual environment for foreigners.

Is the Translate Poland Campaign restricted to translators?

Maja Zawierzeniec: It’s a social campaign that has been divided into several stages, and translation is just one of them.

People who are passionate about photography and keen observers of surrounding reality are invited to document communication gaps, mistranslations and linguistic absurdities in our environment and public space. Our colleagues, clients and associates all have ample opportunities to observe how deficient we are in this respect during their business or vacation trips to various parts of our country.

Others, who have contacts with foreigners for professional or social reasons, are encouraged to initiate discussions and draw up lists of communication issues that are most troublesome while travelling and living in Poland.

Last but not least, translators of the five most popular European languages (English, German, French, Russian, Spanish) are then invited to translate public announcements and other communication materials as part of our project.

How can one take part in the campaign?

Maja Zawierzeniec:Photographic material, lists, opinions and suggestions should initially be sent to me at m.zawierzeniec@maart.pl throughout the summer.

Within a month the Translate Poland Portal should be ready and once we launch it, people can register and contribute material directly. Additionally, translators and revisers should start registering and collaborating on the translation part of the project starting in July. Watch out for the official launch announcement at www.translatepoland.org

We shall also be promoting the Translate Poland Campaign to various PR and networking communities at www.poland.gov.pl, LinkedIn, nasza-klasa.pl portal and in the media.

Did you know that…

A standard page is not equal to a printed page in the translation business?
Professional translation agencies usually use a standard conversion page for translation equal to 1500 characters (including spaces) which is based on the EU standard or a word count (in localisation). To check the amount of standard pages in a given document go to word count (statistics) in the tools section of Microsoft Word Editor. Select Tools, Word Count, Characters with spaces. The total should then be divided by 1500 to give you the standard page count. The standard 1500 character page was first introduced by the European Union. But beware: there are many other systems used in the world and a court (sworn) translation is estimated on the basis of a 1125 character standard page (including spaces). In this case, the standard page, as well as many other terms of service is based on State regulations.
